Until August, the US government saw the Taliban regime as
a source of stability in Central Asia that would enable the construction of
an oil pipeline across Central Asia from the rich oilfields in Turkmenistan,

Ocean. Until now the oil and gas reserves of Central Asia have been controlled
by Russia. The Bush government wanted to change all that. But, confronted with
Taliban's refusal to accept US conditions, this rationale of energy security

told the Taliban, "either you accept our offer of a carpet of gold, or we bury

that went across the road. To the right was an elevated shed like structure,

Security Internal Checkpoint." There were sandbags and the wooden arm
that crossed the road read "100% ID Checked." Then there was a small shed
to the right with a small barbed wire area behind that. On this structure
was a sign, which read, "All citizens not having proper identification
will be detained." At each of these posts there will be six armed Army
or National Guard reservists with M-16's with full field kit. On top of
the structure to the rear, the open structure on top, there's a man with

Arms Unmanned Aircraft
The United States is for the first time flying armed,
unmanned aircraft into combat and controlling them with operators in the
United States thousands of miles from the battlefield in Afghanistan.
The use of the armed RQ-1 Predators is a revolutionary step in the conduct
of warfare. The Air Force has outfitted them with Hellfire antitank missiles.
The Air Force is also believed to be trying to weaponize the RQ-4A Global
Hawk, a much longer-range unmanned surveillance aircraft that might eventually
be able to carry weapons from the continental United States to targets
around the world. In April, the craft flew 8,600 miles from California
to Australia. Predators are usually operated by the Air Force. But in
the Afghanistan conflict, the day-to-day operation has been handled by
the Central Intelligence Agency.

surveillance drones in the sky. The CIA units, the "Special Activities

who do not wear military uniforms. The division's arsenal includes unmanned
aerial Predator drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and Hellfire

holding the engines. During the night, a terrorist saboteur disguised
as a ground crew mechanic could reach up in the back of the left jet engine
and with a pair of diagonal cutter pliers simply cut the hydraulic line
going to the thrust reverser actuator and the control safety sensor lines.
The next morning about an hour after the jet engines were started, the
hydraulic fluid now under pressure would drip from the cut line until
none was left in the line and the thrust reverser would simply slowly
drift into the full on condition while in flight and a catastrophic crash
would occur only seconds later.

As a gesture of humanitarian support, the US government
air-dropped 37,000 packets of emergency rations into Afghanistan. Aid
workers have condemned it as a cynical, dangerous, public-relations exercise.
First, because the food will never get to those who really need it. More
dangerously, those who run out to retrieve the packets risk being blown
up by landmines. A tragic alms race. Nevertheless, the food packets had
a photo-op all to themselves. Each yellow packet, decorated with the American
flag, contained: rice, peanut butter, bean salad, strawberry jam, crackers,
raisins, flat bread, an apple fruit bar, seasoning, matches, a set of
plastic cutlery, a serviette and illustrated user instructions. After

The level of cultural ineptitude, the failure to understand what months
of relentless hunger and grinding poverty really mean, the US government's
attempt to use even this abject misery to boost its self-image, beggars

The “conspiracy theories” Bush is referring
to have three basic premises: The first is that the attack was known about
(and possibly, planned) by various elements of the U.S. government before
9/11 and was allowed to take place in order to bring about certain conditions,

Britain is to be placed under a state of 'public emergency'
as part of an unprecedented government move to allow internment without
trial of suspected terrorists. The order, which says the events of 11
September are 'threatening the life of the nation', will allow Britain

bans detention without trial. It will pave the way for indefinite imprisonment
of foreign nationals and will contain new laws to tackle "religious hatred".

What already was a global economic slowdown has been
gathering momentum since Sept. 11, dashing hopes for a quick U.S. economic
turnaround and raising the specter of worldwide recession. J.P. Morgan

1 percent this year and the next. The major industrialized economies of
the world- the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe- are growing weakly
or shrinking, while the once red-hot economies of Asia and Latin America

told to back off soon after George W Bush became president. Bush at one

family. There was a suspicion that the US strategic interest in Saudi
Arabia, which has the world's biggest oil reserve, blunted its inquiries
into individuals with suspected terrorist connections -- so long as the

with a possible terrorist organisation. Bush made his first million 20

The whole Sept 11 violence is just another step in

Seventeen years later than expected, 1984 has arrived.
In his address to Congress, George Bush effectively declared permanent
war- war without temporal or geographic limits; war without clear goals;

Orwell's dreary classic, the totalitarian state of Oceania is perpetually
at war with either Eurasia or Eastasia. Although the enemy changes periodically,
the war is permanent; its true purpose is to control dissent and sustain

the Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA) on a project designed to
facilitate the remote recovery of hijacked American aircraft that allowed
specialist ground controllers to listen in to cockpit conversations on
the target aircraft, then take absolute control of its computerized flight
control system by remote means. From that point onwards, regardless of
the wishes of the hijackers or flight deck crew, the hijacked aircraft
could be recovered and landed automatically at an airport of choice, with
no more difficulty than flying a radio-controlled model plane. The engineers
had no idea that almost thirty years after its initial design, the top
secret computer codes would be broken, and the system used to facilitate
direct ground control of the four aircraft used in the high-profile attacks
on New York and Washington on 11th September 2001.

significant terrorist training camps in the world, and any one of them

in the world. There appears to be a hidden agenda behind these major war
preparations- and fighting terrorism may well be only the excuse.

Who Is Osama Bin Laden?
Since the Cold War era, Washington has consciously supported Osama bin
